Kalaja e Dalmacës Hike
Aperçu
Kalaja e Dalmacës, near the village of Koman in northern Albania, is an archaeological site of special importance for studying medieval Albanian culture. Excavations here have illuminated a developed civilization of the early Middle Ages, including varied structures and the ruins of churches. Later work by scholars such as Paul Traeger and Austro-Hungarian consul Theodor Ippen brought to light ornaments, weapons and other material-culture objects. These finds helped identify a distinct culture known as the “Koman culture,” dating to the 7th and 8th centuries. Among the structures uncovered are church ruins that attest to the presence of Christianity and Byzantine influence in the region during the early Middle Ages. Specific detail on those church remains remains limited in available sources. Kalaja e Dalmacës and its archaeological discoveries are key to understanding cultural continuity from the Illyrian period into the Arbër period, offering important evidence for Albanian identity and heritage. This guided hike runs about one hour up and one hour down from the Komani Guide base. Ideal for small groups who want history and views above the lake.
